Probably best known as the author of the hymn "Amazing Grace," John Newton (1725-1807) is now largely forgotten among evangelical Christians. But it is worth recalling something of Newton's remarkable story. His parish ministry, practice of spiritual direction, and the integrity of his personal relationships make him a trustworthy guide for Christians today.

The Life and Spirituality of John Newton edition by John Newton Bruce Hindmarsh Religion Spirituality eBooks

The story of the life of John Newton is definitely one that every Christian should become familiar with. For a great comprehensive book on the life of John Newton I would recommend you read, "John Newton, from Disgrace to Amazing Grace," by Jonathan Aitken.

This book is a collection of John Newton's personal letters that he was asked to write by a friend who thought that people should hear directly from Newton as to what his life had been like. Bruce Hindmarsh gives us a short introduction to the life of Newton and the reason for these letters to have been written in the first place. But then the rest of the book is a collection of Newton's letters.

To read the letters from John Newton is to find yourself investigating the life of a young man that had it extremely difficult yet found that God had a plan for him and that God's plan would not be stopped short. Newton was to come full circle with his life and serve the Lord Jesus Christ as a fine young man and bring the Gospel to hundreds of people.

I was highly encouraged by these letters and trust that you will be as well.

The Life and Spirituality of John Newton edition by John Newton Bruce Hindmarsh Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

Interesting, but this collection of his letters leaves a lot out.
Was very happy with my purchase!!!!
This was an excellent book on how John Newton's life was a journey in spiritual growth and how a sovereign God directs our lives and circumstances for our growth and his glory.

Very humbling and enlightening.
The Authentic Narrative by Newton is a classic from the very earliest of days in the Evangelical movement - mid 18th century England. While it is with regret that at the time of his writing his biography the horrors and sinfulness of the slave trade were not yet apparent to him (Newton later becomes a driving force in the life of Wilberforce and the abolition of slavery in England).

The text itself is well presented with a great introduction by Hindmarsh. The biography is well paced for modern readers and presents a riveting tail of near death experiences, love and salvation. Would recommend this book to anyone looking for an inspiring biography that will inspire them to incorporate their understanding of God's working into the situations of their life.
John Newton, author of the famous Christian hymn, Amazing Grace, tells the amazing story of his early life as a slaver in Africa, and how God in His mercy removed him from that life and drew the young Newton to Himself, in the first portion of this short book.

The fourteen chapters of what has since been called Newton's Narrative are rendered in the form of fourteen one-sheet letters published in 1764. Newton is known for the many encouraging letters he wrote to friends and family during his life as a minister in the Church of England--letters that are filled with sound Christian encouragement even for readers today.

The final portion of the book consists of three of his landmark letters "Grace in the Blade", "Grace in the Ear", and "Grace in the Full Corn in the Ear", a three-part explanation of his views on the Christian walk of a new believer, the older believer, and the mature Christian, taken from Mark 428. These letters are but a taste of the spiritual insight of a man who loved Jesus Christ above all things, and who for the rest of his life remained thankful to Him for saving him out of a life of sin and degradation--a slave of slaves in Africa.
Revealed Newton's life and method of the gradual steps one would take to fully understand ones salvation. A small book full of a inspiration for those in search for peace with God and those who want to understand their salvation.
This slice of Newton's life revealed through a series of letters to a friend, gives the reader insight into the "theatre of the persistent grace of God" at work in Newton's life. It's not the narrative of events that instructs the reader but the thankful heart of a man who seemed never to get over the love and goodness of God toward him. Newton knew himself for what he was only because of the grace of God. The next time you hear the hymn Amazing Grace you will hear the depth of Newton's gratitude in song.
